Chelsea's Jiffy Mix aims to expand operations
CHELSEA, Mich. (AP) -- The company commonly known as Jiffy Mix aims to expand its operations in the southeastern Michigan city of Chelsea.
AnnArbor.com says that the Chelsea Milling Co. bought about 4 acres of industrial property adjacent to its factories. It wants to redevelop the site for food storage and shipping as part larger plans that include nine new grain silos.
The prepared baking mix maker needs city approval to create a brownfield redevelopment plan for the property. Such plans are designed to help redevelop land that might otherwise go unused because of contamination or other issues.
The brownfield redevelopment proposal is pegged at about $4.9 million.
The family-owned business dates back to 1930. Members of the Holmes family have milled flour in the area since the early 1800s.
