100 years of Goodfellows Parade

Detroit Tigers mascot Paws became an honorary “Old Newsboy” and joined attorneys, politicians and businesspeople in the 100th annual Detroit Goodfellows Sales Day and Parade on Monday, Dec. 2.

With Paws are (left to right) past Goodfellows President Mike Coakley, senior principal with Miller, Canfield, Paddock, & Stone PLC; former Detroit Mayor and Michigan Supreme Court Justice Dennis Archer, chairman emeritus at Dickinson Wright; and Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund board members Walter Koppy and Ted Kedzierski, Of Counsel with Charfoos & Christenson.

The Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit was founded in 1914 by James J. Brady. The organization includes 300 members whose sole mission is to ensure that there is “No Kiddie without a Christmas.”

The organization has many events planned during its 100 anniversary year, including participation in 17th Little Caesars Pizza Bowl on Dec. 26 at Ford Field and a 100th anniversary gala in May, culminating with the publication of a 100-year history of the Old Newsboys to be published in the fall 2014 by Arcadia Publishing, the leading local history publisher in the United States. John Minnis and Lauren McGregor, authors of the Arcadia title “Michigan State Fair,” have been contracted to collate photographs and write the book for the Detroit Goodfellows.
