State police launch ID theft awareness campaign

OAK PARK (AP) -- State police are starting an identity theft awareness campaign. Beginning this month, the community service troopers of the Michigan State Police Metro Post in Oak Park will be available to give identity theft awareness seminars. The troopers are available to talk at town hall meetings, block club meetings, civic and service organization meetings, business luncheons, home owner association meetings and other get-togethers. State police officials say they're launching the campaign "in response to the security breach at a major retailer which exposed the sensitive financial information of many Michigan citizens." Discount retailer Target announced last month it was hit with a massive data security breach that affected about 40 million debit and credit card holders who shopped at its stores between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15.
