Series presents 2014 labor and employment law update

Raising the Bar, an educational series raising employer awareness of current issues in employment and labor law and offered by Detroit-based management side labor and employment law firm Nemeth Law PC, returns Wednesday, Jan. 22, to discuss developments in labor and employment law over the past year and what employers need to do to remain in compliance in the year ahead. In 2013, according to Patricia Nemeth of Nemeth Law, federal agencies continued the expansion of employee centered policies and regulations, while both federal and state courts demonstrated a willingness to challenge and limit the agencies' abilities to do so. Additionally, the health insurance marketplace continued to confound small businesses. "Rapidly changing, and frequently contradictory, decisions have left many employers wondering about the legality of their policies and procedures across the board," said Nemeth. "The labor and employment law update will allow employers the opportunity to take stock of where they have been and where they are going." Topics to be covered at the 2014 labor and employment law update include: * Best practices for accommodating religion in the workplace as national origin and religious accommodation cases continue to rise sharply. * Best practices for conducting EEOC-friendly pre-employment screenings. * Defining supervisors under Title VII and addressing the "but-for" causation standard for retaliatory discharge. * Implications of re-classifications of obesity and mental impairments with respect to the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). * What to expect from new leadership at the Department of Labor and the National Labor Relations Board. * Update on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act from Mike Nixon of the Hylant Group (www.hylant.com). Raising the Bar will be offered Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the Southfield Westin, 1500 Town Center.
