Karen Geibel announces candidacy for Oakland County Circuit Court

Karen Geibel, judicial staff attorney for Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Rudy Nichols, has announced she is running for Oakland County Circuit Court judge.

Geibel will be running for the recently re-opened seat which has been vacant since the retirement of Judge Jack McDonald.  McDonald recently endorsed her to take his old job, remarking, “Karen is highly qualified for the position.”

Nichols concurred and said “Karen is an intelligent, dedicated and hard working attorney who would be a great addition to the bench.”

Geibel, 41, began working for the Oakland County Circuit Court in 1999, and has been a judicial research attorney for Nichols since 2004.  Before that, she served as his deputy law clerk and also practiced insurance defense at a private firm.

In her current position, Geibel is responsible for researching legal issues relative to all civil and criminal cases in General Jurisdiction;  preparing written opinions and oral rulings regarding all dispositive motions, injunctions, appeals, jury instructions and evidentiary issues, both civil and criminal; conducting settlement conferences; and participating in docket management and pre-trial preparation of all cases.

Former Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Bill Hampton says, “Karen Geibel is one of the finest research attorneys I’ve known.  Perceptive, analytical and knowledgeable.  She’d be an asset to the bench.”

Geibel is an active member in the Rochester Area Jaycees, teaches catechism at St. Kieran Church, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Romeo Girls Softball league.

Recently, she was nominated and joined the Oakland County Bar Foundation Fellows.  Geibel is an ongoing volunteer judge in the Michigan Center of Civic Education High School Mock Trial Tournament which occurs yearly in March.

“I am ready to apply my everyday experience and knowledge as the next circuit court judge,” Geibel said.  “I’m grateful for the outpouring of support within the legal community and excited for this awesome opportunity.”
