Man charged with using religion to pull off scam
SOUTHFIELD (AP) -- A Detroit man is accused of using religion to gain the confidence of people with mortgage problems and steal more than $300,000.
The Michigan attorney general's office says Anthony Carta had a company called Freedom by Faith Ministries. He's accused of pocketing their money but doing nothing to help more than 100 people.
The 53-year-old Carta is charged with seven crimes, including running a criminal enterprise. He was due last Thursday in Southfield District Court.
He doesn't have a listed phone number and it's unknown if he has a lawyer.
Attorney General Bill Schuette says "using the guise of faith" to trick people is "deplorable."
