Son charged with murder in mother's fire death

ROYAL OAK (AP) — Suburban Detroit authorities have filed a murder charge against a 50-year-old man they say set fire to his house, killing his 69-year-old mother.  The fire happened last Friday in Royal Oak.

District Court Judge Derek Meinecke ordered Timothy Beetschen jailed without bond Saturday on open-murder and arson charges in the death of Maxine Hadley. His next court appearance is June 6.

The Associated Press left a message for defense lawyer Todd Flood on Tuesday seeking comment.

Police Chief Corrigan O’Donohue says Hadley called to say her son was trying to blow up their home.

O’Donohue says police arrived to find the house engulfed in flames and Beetschen trying to extinguish the blaze with a hose.

O’Donohue says Hadley’s body was found in the basement.

Authorities say Beetschen was treated for burns.
