More than 122,000 seek funds after Aug. flooding

DETROIT (AP) - Officials say more than 122,000 southeastern Michigan residents have registered to receive nearly $216 million in federal disaster relief funds and loans following August's flooding. The Detroit News reports an update on the funding was released Monday by the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA has approved $131 million in grants, while the U.S. Small Business Administration has approved $84.9 million in low-interest loans. Those applying for FEMA assistance have until Dec. 14 to register. Those applying for SBA assistance have until Dec. 15 to register. Some areas received more than 6 inches of rain that flooded basements, streets and freeways. Damage and cleanup costs have been estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
