On May 12, the University of Michigan-Dearborn extended its Community Service Personnel Scholarship program to employees of the Oakland County Circuit Court and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. The participation agreements were formally signed by Oakland County Circuit Court Chief Judge Nanci Grant, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, UMD Dean Martin Hershock, and UMD Criminal Justice Studies Program Director (and former Washtenaw County Circuit Judge) Dr. Donald Shelton.
The Community Service Personnel Scholarship program at the University of Michigan-Dearborn was established to recognize the service of public safety personnel to our communities and to encourage them to pursue or continue their educational goals. The program provides a scholarship valued at 20% of tuition and fees for public safety employees at partnering organizations. Although administered through the Criminal Justice Studies Program, the scholarship is available for degree-seeking students in any UMD department or program and can be used for undergraduate and graduate programs.
The agreement with the Oakland County Sheriff brings the number of participating police agencies in Southeast Michigan to sixteen. The University agreement with the Oakland County Circuit Court is the first to provide the scholarship to court employees.
“The University extension of this scholarship opportunity to court employees is a significant expansion of our program and recognizes the important public service that court employees provide to our communities. We expect to enter into similar agreements with additional courts and police agencies before the beginning of our fall semester,” Shelton said.
