Municipalities allowed electronic property tax rolls

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation that will allow local governments to maintain electronic property tax rolls instead of requiring them to routinely print lengthy paper copies.

“Local governments are constantly finding new ways to streamline services and save taxpayer money,” Snyder said. “Allowing them to use electronic property tax rolls is another great move to accomplish both goals.”

House Bill 4168, sponsored by state Rep. Sam Singh, allows local governments to use a computerized tax system without the State Tax Commission’s authorization. It is likely to result in savings for local governments, allowing them to spend the funding normally used to print tax rolls on other municipal services. The bill is now Public Act 140 of 2015.

The governor also signed two additional bills on Tuesday:

—HB 4354, sponsored by Rep. Michael Webber, permits insurance documents deemed trade secrets by industry experts to be kept private, subject to the approval of the director of the Department of Insurance and Financial Services. This will ensure that proprietary information is protected. It is now PA 141.

—Senate Bill 144, sponsored by Sen. Tom Casperson, waives on-site inspections for temporary food service facilities at the discretion of local health departments. Only low-risk foods are exempt from inspection, and a temporary facility is defined as being in operation for 14 days or less.  The bill is now PA 142.

All three bills were approved with bipartisan support in both the House and Senate.
