Competency exam next for local man in embezzlement case

CLARKSTON (AP) - A former credit union official who told Oakland County authorities that he embezzled millions of dollars will be examined to determine if he understands the charges and can assist his lawyer.

Michael LaJoice appeared in District Court in Clarkston on Wednesday. The mental exam was requested by his lawyer and approved by a judge.

LaJoice was chief financial officer at Clarkston Brandon Community Credit Union. The Oakland County sheriff's office says he stepped forward a few weeks ago and said he stole $20 million over 12 years.

LaJoice owns a dance studio in Fenton and put millions of dollars into his home. His lifestyle didn't appear to match his $65,000-a-year salary.
