Detroit's Eastern Market lays out ten year development plan

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit's Eastern Market is laying out a 10-year economic development framework that seeks to continue to revitalize the market and the surrounding area.

The announcement Tuesday from the Eastern Market Corp., the nonprofit that operates and promotes the market, comes as the market this year celebrates its 125th anniversary.

Dan Carmody, president of EMC, says the "Eastern Market 2025" plan updates its 2008 strategic plan and drew on input from more than 600 Detroiters. Recommendations include increasing the density of development, improving pedestrian and public transit access, and expanding off-hour activities.

This year, officials with Eastern Market are gathering stories of how the market has played a role in people's lives. And public events to mark the anniversary also are planned.
