The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association was invited to attend a public forum titled “Breaking the Cycle” by the United Methodist Women, Church &?Society Prison Ministries of Hope United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 25, in the fellowship hall of Hope United Methodist Church in Southfield. Speaking at the forum were (left to right) Jeffrey Miller, director of the Empowerment Project and author of “Up from the Under”; Oakland County 46th District Court Judge Debra Nance; and Mark Fancher, ACLU Racial Justice Project staff attorney and author of “School to Prison Pipeline.”  The forum explored the issues associated with the mass incarceration of minority and low income criminal offenders and the disparate educational, socio-economic, legislative, and judicial experiences they encounter along the way.
