Violent crime down in Detroit, Flint, Saginaw according to FBI report

Violent crime decreased by double digits in 2015 in the cities of Detroit, Flint, and Saginaw, according to the FBI's annual crime report released Monday that includes the offenses of murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

The cities of Detroit, Flint and Saginaw are part of Michigan's Secure Cities Partnership (SCP) initiative designed to address crime through a comprehensive system of 'smart justice' that recognizes the connection between enforcement and community engagement.

The FBI report shows that from 2015 to 2014, the violent crime rate was reduced by 18.1% in Saginaw, 14.3% in Flint and 13% in Detroit, when compared to the same time period in 2014.

"I commend the State Police and their partners in reinventing public safety in our state," said Gov. Rick Snyder. "Michigan will only reach its full potential when the problem of violent crime is addressed in every city. The data just released by the FBI shows that the Secure Cities Partnership and the focus on 'smart justice' is making a significant, positive impact in our efforts to prevent crime and keep all Michiganders safe."

"We are pleased to see that our proactive policing efforts are making a positive difference in reducing violent crime impacting Michigan citizens," Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP. "By working together with our community and public safety partners, we will continue to reduce violent crime and protect the citizens we serve."

The MSP developed the SCP in 2012 at the direction of Gov. Snyder to provide enhanced law enforcement support in the SCP communities to reduce crime and enhance the quality of life in these cities. The MSP initiated directed patrols utilizing the Data-Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety (DDACTS) to identify and target criminal hot spots, as well as establishing Major Case Units to enhance investigative efforts with local law enforcement.

In 2015, the MSP expanded the SCP initiative to help reduce crime in six additional communities in Michigan, including Benton Harbor, Hamtramck, Harper Woods, Highland Park, Inkster, and Muskegon Heights.
