Appeals court says crime victims can collect if using sick time

LAPEER (AP) - The Michigan appeals court says crime victims can be entitled to compensation if they use vacation or sick time to recover. The court this week made its ruling in the case of Dakota Turn, who pleaded guilty to attempted murder in Lapeer County. The victim, who was stabbed, used vacation, sick time and personal days before he was able to return to his job with the state. A judge said Nathaniel Scramlin should be paid $2,100 because he had to use 112 hours of leave time after the attack - hours that he can't recover. The appeals court agreed this week, saying Turn must make restitution. The 25-year-old Turn isn't eligible for parole until 2032. Published: Fri, Oct 14, 2016
