On May 8, Oakland County Commissioner Bill Dwyer received the Nancy Bates Distinguished Public Servant Award. Established in 2014 by the Farmington Hills/Farmington Commission for Children, Youth & Families, the Volunteer Recognition Awards – including the Nancy Bates Distinguished Public Servant Award – are presented annually to individuals who have improved the quality of life in the Farmington and Farmington Hills communities through their hard work and exceptional dedication to volunteerism and service.
“I am humbled and honored to be given this award,” said Dwyer. “My deepest thanks go to the Commission members and the communities of Farmington and Farmington Hills. I was very fortunate to have served on the Commission for many years and had the privilege of working with countless local volunteers, who kindly and selflessly donate their time, talent and resources. The leadership of the Commission and its members is essential to the fabric of our community, and I am happy and grateful to know and work with them.”
Dwyer is the 4th recipient of the Nancy Bates Distinguished Public Servant Award and 1st recipient of the award not a former mayor. Past recipients of the Nancy Bates Distinguished Public Servant Award include Nancy Bates herself, Jerry Ellis, and Jan Dolan.
Dwyer has been active in the Farmington and Farmington Hills communities for decades. In 1985, he was appointed police chief of Farmington Hills and served in that position for 23 years. Dwyer is involved with the Optimist Club of Farmington/Farmington Hills, the Farmington Hills/Farmington Community Foundation, the Rotary Club of Farmington Hills and the Farmington Hills Police Benevolent Association. In 2010, he was elected to the Oakland County Board of Commissioners and represents the 14th District, which includes the communities of Farmington, Farmington Hills, Southfield Township, Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms, and Franklin.
