Attorney discusses cybersecurity and data privacy at law school

Attorney Jeffrey May, of Kerr, Russell, and Weber PLC, presented “Our Network Has Been Hacked!” at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus on Monday, Feb. 11.

May, who spoke about the constantly changing laws governing data privacy, explained risks that most are not aware of regarding cybersecurity. He spoke with law students about advising clients on the importance of protecting themselves from breaches in security, and their obligations following a data breach.

“We recommend to our business clients to create a written security policy,” said May.  “Most companies do not have one, larger companies do, but all businesses should have one.” Additionally May explained that “a company’s biggest security threat is its employees.”

While talking about various aspects of security policies, May said that while working with clients to create policies, he has learned that it builds a higher level of trust with those he works with.
