McElroy speaker welcomed

The University Detroit Mercy School of Law hosted its 21st annual McElroy Lecture on March 13. This year’s lecturer was Rebecca French (center) of SUNY at Buffalo School of Law. French explored why the discipline of Buddhism and Law has never been accepted in the west as a type of religion and law, despite the fact that the Buddha inspired a law code that has been called the founding charter of Buddhism. “Just as we have a Christian legal tradition, a Jewish legal tradition, an Islamic legal tradition that we study, I think we should look at the Buddhist legal tradition,” said French. Welcoming French were Detroit Mercy Law Prof. Cara Cunningham Warren (left) and Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis. L. Crocker.
