Michigan Supreme Court seeking volunteer docents

The Michigan Supreme Court is looking for volunteer docents to guide school groups and other visitors through its Learning Center exhibit gallery. Interested candidates can attend a new volunteer information session on Wednesday, Sept.11, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., at the Center.

Activities and exhibits at the Learning Center, located on the first floor of the Hall of Justice in Lansing, reflect the Supreme Court’s commitment to increasing access and educating the public about the third branch of government.

“Learning Center docents are vital to our mission of educating the public because they serve as ambassadors for the judicial branch,” explained Justice Richard Bernstein, the court’s liaison to the Learning Center. “We pride ourselves on bringing in volunteers who are enthusiastic, passionate about learning, and committed to connecting with people of all ages and abilities.”

Responsibilities include leading interactive activities and demonstrating hands-on exhibits at the center, including a model courtroom, as well as assisting at special events. In-depth legal knowledge is not necessary for applicants. Volunteers must be willing to commit to working a minimum of eight hours per month.

Applications are due Sept. 13 to allow time for application screening and interviews. Once hired, docents are required attend a series of three-hour orientation sessions, which will start Sept. 25 and take place on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon through Oct. 30. Classes will include information about the Michigan judicial system, Learning Center exhibits, and tips for giving great tours.

Contact Learning Center Coordinator Rachael Drenovsky at 517-373-5027 or drenovskyr@courts.mi.gov to get an application. Interviews and background checks are required for all applicants.

The Learning Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours are free, and typically last 60 to 90 minutes. Groups of 10 more must schedule in advance for guided tours; self-guided, walk-in tours are available for smaller groups. The Learning Center offers online resources for educators and students, including lesson plans, educational games, and a free e-newsletter.
