Reising Ethington welcomed special guest Thomas Sprague to its Troy offices on Thursday, Aug. 29. Sprague is the great-great grandson of Colonel Thomas Sprague, the founder of the original firm in 1865.

Firm attorneys learned that Col. Sprague came to Detroit before the Civil War with his parents and brother. He was the founder and leader of Michigan's 27th infantry division, and ventured into patent law after the war.

Col. Sprague was the leader of the firm for 22 years, working with his son, Harry Sprague, and a number of other associates in supporting prominent businesses in the Detroit area.

During the early years of the firm, the office was located in downtown Detroit at the Sietz Building, occupying a portion of the site of the present Buhl Building.

With extensive ties in the local community, including preeminent connections particularly with the automotive industry, the firm has grown and evolved over the last 150 years. Today, Reising Ethington remains focused on intellectual property law, predominantly patent law.

The firm, now located in Troy, has grown to include more than twenty attorneys admitted to practice in front of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, representing local and international companies throughout a wide range of industries.
