'Veteran's Disability Benefits' focus of OCBA seminar, Oct. 10

The Oakland County Bar Association will present “Handling Veteran’s Disability Benefits” on Thursday, Oct. 10, from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. at the OCBA offices, 1760 South Telegraph Road, Suite 100, in Bloomfield Hills.

Many veterans and/or their families, and those appointed to care for them or their estates, are unaware of the disability benefits to which the veterans are entitled. For attorneys with practice areas that include family law, elder law, guardianships and conservatorships, Social Security, and estate planning, this seminar will prepare them to help clients. Topics of discussion will include:

• Underlying statutes and available disability benefits for veterans
• Procedures for requesting disability benefits
• Challenging denial of disability benefits
• Benefits to non-service-connected veterans and their relatives

Speaking at the seminar will be Kristina L. Derro of Legal Help for Veterans PLLC and Garth E. Wootten, manager of Oakland County Veterans’ Services Division.

Cost for the seminar is $40 for OCBA members; $30 for new lawyer, paralegal, and student members; and $50 for non-members. To register or for additional information, visit www.ocba.org and click on “events.”
