The State Bar of Michigan, The Joseph Project, Lakeshore Legal Aid, D. Augustus Straker Bar Association, and the Oakland County Bar Association partnered to offer a human trafficking training on Thursday, Oct. 17, from 8 a.m. to noon. “The Legal First Responders: Equipping Attorneys to Empower Human Trafficking Survivors” training was hosted at the Auburn Hills campus of Western Michigan University Cooley Law School and was simultaneously broadcast to WMU-Cooley’s campuses in Lansing and Grand Rapids. Among those taking part in the program were (left to right) D. Augustus Straker Bar Association President Kimberly Ann Ward, The Joseph Project Founder and CEO Nate Knapper, State Bar of Michigan President Jennifer Grieco, Lakeshore Legal Aid CEO Ashley Lowe, and Christina Guirguis of Lakeshore Legal Aid. “When you think about a legal first responder, our interpretation of that is somebody who’s willing to mobilize quickly to meet an urgent need and we believe that human trafficking survivors are people who have those kinds of needs,” Knapper stated. “The purpose of the training is going to be to equip these attorneys in order to meet those needs.” The event was free of charge with the commitment to accept a human trafficking referral on a pro bono basis within one year of the training.
