Oakland County lawyer and Western Michigan University Cooley Law School graduate Syeda Davidson of Sharp Law Firm was presented with WMU-Cooley’s Integrity Award on Nov. 12. Davidson, who practices employment and civil rights law, was the featured speaker during the law school’s Integrity in Our Communities speaker series.

Davidson, who serves on the Equal Access Initiative of the Justice Initiative and the Oakland County Bar Association Board of Directors, has chaired several committees for the Oakland County Bar Association, including the Law-Related Education Committee and the New Lawyers Committee. This year, she was asked to return to chair the P.A.L.S. (Providing Access to Legal Services) committee for the second time.

Additionally, Davidson serves on the ACLU Lawyers’ Committees for Oakland County and Michigan, as well as the Directors for Affirmations, a community center focused on LGBT education and advocacy in Ferndale. Through this position, she implemented a holiday program that was specifically inclusive to low-income, LGBT families in 2014.  Davidson is also on the board of directors for Detroit Together Men’s Chorus, an all-male chorus for gay and gay-supportive individuals.

During her presentation at WMU-Cooley’s Auburn Hills campus, Davidson spoke about the importance of taking care of yourself not just during law school, but afterward when practicing law.

“Your well being is going to be more important than your practice,” she told attendees. “Know that taking better care of yourself will allow you to be a better advocate for your clients.

“Life doesn’t slow down after law school, it just gets busier,” Davidson added. “So this is me imploring you to take care of yourself first.”

The WMU-Cooley Integrity Award is presented each term to a member of the community who demonstrates a high level of integrity and has a positive influence on the legal profession.
