Michigan Department of Civil Rights to host fair housing training

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) Division on Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing (DODDBHH) will conduct a fair housing training session in Detroit on Thursday, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Samaritan Center Room 1623 located at 5555 Connor Street.

The fair housing training is specifically designed to provide information on fair housing for individuals who are deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing, as well as property owners, landlords, and agencies that serve the deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing community.

"This training is tailored for individuals who are deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing with opportunities to learn about housing rights and what accommodations and modifications property owners must provide under state and federal laws," said Annie Urasky, director of the DODDBHH. "The goal of this training is not only to educate but to also encourage equal access and to eliminate unlawful discrimination in housing for these communities."

Experienced fair housing experts will be on site to answer questions and help citizens understand your rights under various laws.

DODDBHH is hosting several trainings in cities around the state in partnership with fair housing centers in each city and other fair housing and service organizations. These trainings are made possible through a $10,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide fair housing training specifically for the deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing communities and the organizations which serve these communities.

Advance registration is required for this free training. Access the registration form at www.michigan.gov/doddbhh. Find a link to the form under "What's New."

ASL interpreters will be provided. If anyone needs additional accommodations to attend, contact Karlee Rose Gruetzner at GruetznerK1@michigan.gov or 313-437-7035.
