Board approves additional $10M for emergency response efforts

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners approved an additional $10 million appropriation to strengthen Oakland County’s efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic at its meeting April 13. This new action brings the total to nearly $20 million the Board has dedicated to support the fight against COVID-19.

“Oakland County stands ready to do whatever is necessary and everything possible to protect our community, flatten the curve, and protect our residents,” Chairman David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak) said. “When we get through this, and we will get through this together, we’ll know we did everything we could to fight this pandemic and prepare for the future.”

The Board receives weekly reports from county administration on all expenditures from these funds, as well as projected and other planned use for these monies.

“We believe it’s important that our county administration has the flexibility and resources at their disposal to protect us and manage this crisis,” Commissioner Helaine Zack (D-Huntington Woods) said. “These funds are essential for getting personal protective equipment to health care workers and emergency personnel, increasing testing capacity, and funding the priorities identified by our public health team and emergency operation center.”

The Board also extended County Executive David Coulter’s emergency declaration until April 30, 2020. The Board will consider a further extension later in the month if necessary. Coulter made the original emergency declaration on March 13, and it was scheduled to expire on April 17 after a previous extension by the Board.
