Food inspection records for Oakland County restaurant operators are now available online to the public. The new tool comes after the Oakland County Board of Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution in February requiring the Health Division to create a searchable and easily accessible online database of food inspection records.
Commissioner Kristen Nelson (D-Waterford) introduced the resolution. She said one of the reasons she introduced this initiative was to increase transparency after receiving feedback from constituents that the process to obtain and read reports was difficult.
“At a time when food handling and sanitary conditions can mean the difference between life and death, we owe it to the public to give them easily accessible, searchable data to make informed decisions for themselves and their families,” Nelson said. “I was happy to lead this bipartisan effort, and I appreciate the hard work of the county’s health division and IT department to ensure this information is easily available.”
Each year, foodborne diseases lead to 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths in the United States.
Previously, food inspection reports were only available to members of the public if they submitted a Freedom of Information Act request. The new website will be updated weekly with the most recent reports. They can be found at www.oakgov.com/OCinspections.
