U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (MI) and Gary Peters (MI) on Wednesday announced that the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) will receive $61,757,666 in funding from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). Stabenow and Peters helped secure this funding as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The funds will help ensure that SMART will remain operational during the COVID-19 pandemic. SMART is a regional public transportation provider that offers bus services to families across Southeast Michigan.
“The leadership and employees of the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation work hard to make sure that people can get to their jobs, doctor appointments, and grocery stores,” said Stabenow. “This funding will make sure that they’re able to continue to provide these vital services for our community during this pandemic.”
“Whether it’s to go to work or pick up prescription medication or buy essentials like groceries, Michiganders need reliable public transit now more than ever,” said Peters, a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. “I am pleased that this federal grant will help Metro Detroit’s SMART bus system maintain safe and reliable services and facilities for riders and frontline transit workers across Southeast Michigan.”
