Successful Absent Voter Counting Board to be used in November

Following the overwhelming success of the Oakland County combined  absent voter counting board (AVCB) in the August primary election, Oakland County County Clerk/Register of Deeds Lisa Brown announced that her office will again tabulate absentee ballots for 16 municipalities for the upcoming November general election. Several of the county’s most populous cities, including Southfield, are among those who will be utilizing the County Clerk’s combined AVCB.

“I am proud of our work and thankful to all of the citizens and staff that helped make August a resounding success and appreciate all of those that will be helping in November. In August, the County combined AVCB workers finished tabulating over 50,000 absentee ballots in the late afternoon,” said Brown. “I am grateful for the much needed legislation that allowed me to contract and collaborate with our local clerks and support them in this process.”

Until the recent passage of House Bill 5141, signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, local clerks were largely responsible for tabulating the absentee ballots from voters within their city or township. But with a record number of voters casting absentee ballots, many municipal clerks found welcome assistance through the newly passed law allowing collaboration with county clerks to form combined absent voter counting boards.

With a staff of more than 150 people, following strict guidelines to ensure the integrity of the process, as well as stringent measures to protect the health and safety of those involved, the Oakland County combined AVCB tabulated primary election absentee ballots for a variety of municipalities.

Royal Oak City Clerk Melanie Halas praised the process. “[The AVCB] made sure to have workers in a safe, socially distanced environment, not to mention successfully processing a historic number of absentee ballots in record time. The results for my 24 precincts were posted at 8:02 p.m.!”
