McDonald sworn in as new prosecutor

On Thursday, December 17, Karen McDonald was virtually sworn in as Oakland County’s first new prosecutor in over a decade. Added to keynote speakers Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist, TCF Bank Executive Chairman Gary Torgow, and Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack, the virtual event brought in more than 530 attendees and 86 elected officials.

Gilchrist highlighted the importance of McDonald’s victory in today’s change-focused climate: “In the year 2020, we have seen… some of the most tumultuous times that any of us have ever had to confront, live through, or lead through, but I am confident that Oakland County—the Prosecutor’s Office in Oakland County, the justice system in Oakland County—will be in great and capable hands.”

Torgow praised McDonald’s commitment to the people of Oakland County: “Karen will, without any doubt, be the people’s prosecutor. While she will be tough on crime wherever appropriate, she will ... deliver justice with a big and open heart.”

McDonald’s experience as a circuit court judge will serve her well in her new role, as Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack observed just before swearing McDonald into office: “[Karen] was thoughtful. She was careful. She was merciful. She approached the work every day with integrity.”

After 18 months of campaigning, McDonald embraced her clear mandate from Oakland County voters and became Oakland County’s first new prosecutor in twelve years: “In August and November, the people of Oakland County sent a message: Change is necessary. Reform is necessary. We can be safe, but also be fair and just, and I am so excited to work with the amazing group of people at the Prosecutor’s Office, and all of you, to work together for progress.”
