Commissioner Gershenson elected to serve as board vice chairwoman for a fourth year

On January 20, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners voted to elect Commissioner Marcia Gershenson (D-Bloomfield Twp.) as vice chairwoman until December 31, 2022. She has held this position since 2019.

“I am very proud to be part of the county’s efforts to support all aspects of life in our community,” Gershenson said. “The assistance we continue to offer families, children, small businesses and non-profits is vital. This is a critical time in our county’s history as we respond to emergencies and serve our constituents.”

In 2019, Gershenson spearheaded the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Celebration, which honored the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution with multiple events and educational opportunities over the span of more than a year. She serves as the majority vice chairperson of the Legislative Affairs and Government Operations Committee, chairperson of the Animal Welfare Study Group, and a member of the Pandemic Response Ad Hoc and Reapportionment Ad Hoc Committees.

“Marcia has been indispensable as vice chairwoman these past many years,” Chairman David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak) said. “She is completely engaged in her duty as a commissioner and is fully committed to making Oakland County a better place for everyone.”

Gershenson is also active with the Senior Advisory Council and the board’s efforts to support Oakland County’s older adults. During past terms, she started a Women's Commission for Oakland County and chaired the first Oakland County Childhood Obesity Conference. She has also co-chaired the board’s Gun Safety Committee.

In addition to her service on the board, Gershenson is a co-founder of the Metro Detroit Gilda’s Club Cancer Support Community.

Gershenson was a regular volunteer with Birmingham Public Schools and is a former board member for both Camp M?k-A-Dream and the Michigan League of Conservation Voters.
