Warner Norcross and Plante Moran to discuss changes to estate tax law

Tax and estate planning professionals with Warner, Norcross, & Judd LLP and Plante Moran Financial Advisors are teaming up with Crain’s Detroit Business to offer a free webinar on key changes to estate tax laws for 2010.

Franke Henke, senior counsel in the Southfield office of Warner Norcross, and Dawn Jinsky, a relationship manager for PMFA, will lead an hour-long webinar starting at noon on Wednesday, March 10, on the repeal of the estate tax and generation-skipping transfer tax in 2010 and their impact on estate planning.  Since Congress failed to enact legislation last year to retain these taxes, they are not in place for 2010, even though the federal gift tax will remain in place.

The seminar will focus on:

• The events that led to the repeal of the taxes.

• If and what amendments may be necessary to current estate plans.

• Prospects for the estate tax in 2011 if Congress does not act this year.

The webinar will close with a free question-and-answer session.

The event is free and open to the public.  To register, go online to http://event.on24.com/ r.htm?e=192699&s=1&k=8C380E91BCC750D499768EB488B957CC.

Mom charged in attack ruled incompetent

NOVI (AP) — A 25-year-old Oakland County woman accused of stabbing her 1-year-old son several times with a butcher knife has been found incompetent to stand trial.

District Judge Robert Bondy in Novi last Wednesday ordered Kristy Leigh DeHuff to be transferred to a psychiatric facility near Ypsilanti for treatment.

Defense lawyer Richard A. Foster said last Friday that DeHuff suffered a psychotic breakdown before the attack. He said he’s hopeful that with treatment she’ll regain competency and be found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Authorities said DeHuff stabbed her son Feb. 4 at their Commerce Township home. The baby’s father stopped the attack.

The child underwent surgery. Family members tell WJBK-TV that he is recovering well.
