Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter has appointed Edward Joss as director of facilities management for Oakland County. Joss will help the county’s government campus achieve net carbon neutrality by 2030 while being responsible for more than 50 buildings, 2 million square feet of office space, 450 acres of land, and 30 miles of utilities.
“We didn’t have to go far to find someone who is qualified and has a passion for creating a green, beautiful, and accessible government campus,” Coulter said. “Ed Joss has been a facilities management professional at the county for more than two decades and is dedicated to helping create a more environmentally sustainable campus.”
Joss joined the county in 1999 as an engineering aide working his way through multiple positions to become director of facilities management. He was a maintenance planner from 2001-2005, an architectural engineer from 2005-2008, a supervisor for facilities planning – maintenance and operations from 2008-2011, and a supervisor for facilities planning and engineering from 2011-2012.
Joss served as the manager of facilities planning and engineering since 2012 where he managed a staff of architects, engineers, construction managers, project managers, and interior designers. He developed and managed $70 million-plus, 10-year capital improvement plan and bond-funded projects that ranged from $1 million to $100 million. He was a member of several teams and committees including Environmental Sustainability, Green Team, Safety Committee, and Process Assessment.
Prior to joining the county, Joss was a project coordinator at Coquillard, Dunon, Peterson, & Argenta Architects from 1997-1999. He also worked in various skilled trades from 1990-1997.
Joss has a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture from Lawrence Technological University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan. His certifications include LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Associate, a nationally certified home inspector, and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) 30-hour construction certification. He also is a member of the International Facilities Management Association.
