Attorney to discuss 'Bail Reform' in online training presented by OCBA

The Oakland County Bar Association will present a webinar on "Bail Reform" Tuesday, August 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. via Zoom.

This training will comprehensively address topics relating to the law and practice of issues relating to pre-trial bail. The course will address the Michigan Court Rules governing the imposition of cash bail and other conditions of release, and will cover legal and practical strategies for combatting judicial inclinations to impose cash bail without complying with the rules.

The course will cover recent decisions from the Court of Appeals and Michigan Supreme Court regarding the law of bail as well as the constitutional issues raised by the cash bail system. It will also discuss and explore recent federal lawsuits that have been litigated regarding constitutional issues pertaining to bail and will discuss ongoing efforts to reform the cash bail system both through litigation and legislation. In addition, the webinar will cover the procedures and strategies for appealing adverse bail determinations under MCR 6.106(H), strategies that have been used by advocates with increasing levels of success in recent years.

Speaking at the online program will be attorney Phillip Mayor of the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan.

Cost for the webinar is $12 for OCBA members pre-registration and $25 for non-members pre-registration. Oakland County MIDC court appointed attorneys can attend for free.
