On Wednesday, Sandra Bachman, 61, of Batavia, Ohio, pled guilty in the 30th Circuit Court in Ingham County to charges related to leaving a race-based and politically motivated death threat to then-Michigan State Representative Cynthia A. Johnson in June 2021.
Bachman, who was charged by the Department in March 2022, pled guilty to one count of Threat of Terrorism - Attempt, a 5-year felony, one count of Ethnic Intimidation, a 2-year misdemeanor, and one count of Malicious Use of Telecommunication Services, a 6-month misdemeanor. The plea agreement also requires Bachman to provide a written apology to Johnson and ongoing mental health assessment and treatment.
"We must uphold the safety and integrity of our democratic institutions, and this includes protecting public servants and holding accountable those who threaten to harm them,” Nessel said. “I commend the Michigan State Police Department for investigating this serious matter, and my Department remains committed to ensuring those who make such threats, whether in person, on the phone, or behind a computer, will be prosecuted.”
Michigan State Police investigated the incident before referring the matter to the Department for evaluation.
Bachman’s sentencing is scheduled for June 26th before Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Joyce Draganchuk. The defendant was remanded to jail pending her sentencing.
