Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner Jim Nash is the latest recipient of the Lifetime Contribution Award by the Detroit Metropolitan Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA). The award honors long-term public servants who have significantly advanced the public interest and elevated the prestige of the public service profession.
“I believe public service, particularly in environmental protection, is best achieved through active and open collaboration among dedicated stakeholders on a regional level,” said Nash. “For more than 20 years, I have adhered to this principle, which has facilitated significant change. I am deeply honored and grateful for this recognition by the American Society for Public Administration.”
The award was presented at the 2024 Outstanding Public Service Awards Ceremony and annual meeting of the ASPA-Metropolitan Detroit Chapter, at Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
Nash’s recognition highlights a career marked by service and dedication to fostering good governance practices. He has served Oakland County since 2005, first as a county commissioner emphasizing environmental sustainability, green building, and regional cooperation. He has organized six Green Building Workshops and co-founded the Regional Partnership for Sustainability collaborating with the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) and other organizations.
Elected as Water Resources Commissioner in 2012, Nash has advanced sustainable development and resource conservation in Southeast Michigan, has organized several Regional Stormwater
Summits, Blue Planet Jobs events and played a role in developing the Great Lakes Water Authority. His efforts have earned him multiple awards, including the Michigan Sierra Club's Environmentalist of the Year Award. Under his leadership, his organization received SEMCOG’s Regional Showcase Award and the Water Environment Federation Utility of the Future Today Award.
