Area doctor honored with 2010 crime victims advocate award

Dr. Edwin Gullekson, Medical Director of McLaren's Child Evaluation Center for Abused Children, was presented with the 2010 Crime Victim Advocate of the Year Award, selected annually by Prosecutor David S. Leyton.

Gullekson was praised for his compassionate work in advocating for abused children in Genesee County and for his many years of service on the Board of Directors of the newly renamed Weiss Advocacy Center.

For more than ten years, Gullekson has assisted law enforcement, prosecutors, and children who have been abused, by his dedication in examining hundreds of children for signs of abuse. Most of this service has been performed since Gullekson retired from a long career as a practicing physician and administrator at McLaren, including many years as Chief of Staff.

This award goes back many years and reflects the Prosecutor's desire to give special recognition to men and women in our community who have gone the extra mile on behalf of victims of crime in our community.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Randy Petrides and Marcie Mabry, Assistant Prosecutor and specialist in prosecutions of child abuse cases, presented Gullekson with the award at the Genesee County Bar Association's Annual Law Day Luncheon.

“Dr. Gullekson is a true public servant giving of his time and knowledge to make this a safer community  for children” said David S. Leyton Genesee County Prosecuting Attorney.
