Mott Foundation appoints new vice president

Neal R. Hegarty has been promoted to Vice President and Associate Director of Programs at the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.  Hegarty, who joined the Foundation’s staff in 2000, has held several positions within the Foundation, most recently serving as director of the Flint-Area grantmaking program.  In his new position, he will maintain responsibility for the Flint grantmaking portfolio.

“Neal’s experience working with a range of grantees at the local, state and national levels, coupled with his administrative skills as a team leader, make him an ideal candidate for this new position,” said Foundation President and CEO William S. White.  “In these challenging economic times, his cross-program understanding of urban issues, education, and workforce development will help the Foundation as it strives to become increasingly strategic about its grantmaking.”

Hegarty was assistant director of the Capital Area Literacy Coalition in Lansing, Michigan before joining the Foundation as an associate program officer on the Flint Area team.  In 2003, he was promoted to program officer, managing grant portfolios in the Flint-Area and Pathways Out of Poverty programs.  In 2008, he was named program director of the Flint-Area grantmaking team.
In addition to a bachelor’s degree in political science from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Hegarty earned a master’s in public policy and administration from Michigan State University.
