The Keith Alton Burden Memorial Fund established by the Community Foundation of Greater Flint in 2005 to honor Keith Burden’s life and long history of service was awarded to Flint Northern High School Senior Lakyisha Kirkland at the Flint Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Sarvis Conference Center. Ms. Kirkland was selected to receive the Keith Alton Burden Community Service Award because of her outstanding service with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint.
For the past three years, Lakyisha has participated in a weekly school-based mentoring program at Summerfield Elementary School. She is currently a mentor to a first-grader and has contributed more than 150 hours of service to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Lakyisha is a member of the Northern Student Government and a member of the soccer team. Ms. Kirkland plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University where she will major in Health Care Administration. She will also be honored at the end of the month at the Urban League Black Scholars award ceremony.
Mr. Burden served as Past President of the Big Brothers Board of Directors. He graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1933. The award is given annually to a Northern High School student who has demonstrated exemplary community service both to Flint Northern High School and the Greater Flint community.
“The Big Brothers Big Sisters High School Bigs program provides opportunities for high school youth to give back to the community through mentoring. The ability to recognize a young person for their volunteer efforts through this award will continue to encourage service as a critical part of everyday life,” said Reta Stanley, President/CEO. “We are thankful to Mr. Burden’s friends and fellow Northern Alumni and to the Community Foundation for having the foresight to make this happen.”
The focus of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint is to provide children, primarily from single parent homes, with the friendship of a positive role model. For 67 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been impacting thousands of children in Genesee County through its mentoring outreach and support.
