Wayne Law welcomes incoming class
Wayne State University Law School is pleased to welcome this year's incoming class to campus. Orientation for first-year Wayne Law students began last week at the Law School.
"We are pleased to welcome the entering class," said Wayne Law Dean Robert M. Ackerman. "The class of 2014 boasts a median LSAT score of 157 and a median GPA of 3.39. Class members bring with them a broad range of experience and qualifications. I look forward to meeting each of them over the next few years."
Students of the 181-member entering class represent 12 states (Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Texas and Utah) plus Washington, D.C., and five countries (Canada, India, Nigeria, Russia and the United States).
The undergraduate experience of students in the entering class includes more than 30 different majors and more than 45 colleges and universities. Some of these institutions include the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Wayne State University, the Ohio State University, Cornell University, the University of Notre Dame, Georgetown University, Clark Atlanta University and Texas A&M University.
Admitted students are chosen by the Wayne Law Admissions Committee based on academic achievement, potential and a diverse array of personal attributes.
According to Ericka Jackson, assistant dean of admissions, the class of 2014 includes a number of individuals who carved unique paths to law school. These students include Shawn Blanchard, a South Bronx math teacher who opened his classroom and home to a then-struggling high school student and also co-founded a young men's program; Captain Tanzania Jaysura, a military captain who deferred her admission last year when she was deployed in Afghanistan; Wanda Mays, a 52-year-old student, single mother and Detroit native who recently celebrated her 35-year class reunion from Cass Tech High School; Angela Bajramaj, a stay-at-home mother of five; and Eric Shovein, a 2009 University of Michigan graduate who has already traveled abroad in furtherance of public interest and social justice law.
"Each class is unique and this year is no exception," Jackson said. "I look forward to watching these students grow and learn while making their mark on Wayne Law, the city of Detroit and the nation."
