Foster Swift staff honors veterans with quilts of valor
LANSING, MI -- Prompted by Jaxine Wintjen's visit to a quilt day at a local church on National Quilt Day, the staff at Foster Swift Collins and Smith completed six quilts for the national Quilts of Valor program.
The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover all combat service members and veterans touched by war with a comforting and healing Quilt of Valor. The handcrafted patriotic themed quilts are then delivered with a personal note thanking the returning veteran for their service to the United States of America.
''Until I went to the quilt show, I didn't know this program existed. It really touched my heart,'' said Wintjen, a paralegal at Foster Swift. ''The following Monday, I asked Judy Salminen, our HR director if we could do a Casual Day fundraiser to collect money for the material and I would coordinate finding people to help construct the quilts.''
Judy said yes. Jaxine rounded up co-workers Kelly LaGrave, Joyce Miller, Karen Wilcox, Janice Van Kirk and Richelle McFate, along with family members and friends who transformed the material purchased from a ''Friday Jean's'' day into the six quilts of appreciation to be delivered to U.S. service members. The 12 quilters completed a majority of the project in one marathon Saturday session.
In honor of Veterans Day, Senator Debbie Stabenow stopped by the firm and inspected the quilts. The firm is also hosted an afternoon ice cream social for all staff to showcase the group's efforts.
