"Licensing your dog is one of the most important things you can do as a pet owner," Ingham County Treasurer Eric Schertzing said. In Michigan, dog licensing is one of the legal responsibilities assigned to the county treasurer. "Licensing helps reunite you with your dog if your dog gets lost, and it also helps the County monitor rabies exposures. Rabies vaccination and licensing are required."
Under Michigan law, all dogs must be licensed and have a license tag on their collars while in public. The Ingham County Treasurer's office estimates there are 60,000 dogs in Ingham County, of which about 35% were licensed. Statewide the percentage is estimated to be about 30% - though there are no exact numbers. Fees from licensing help support animal control and the protection of public health.
