Despite the torrential rainstorm that temporarily flooded the roads in Lansing, more than 90 lawyers, judges, family members and friends came to the Third Annual Barristers Night where the Young Lawyers Section of the Ingham County Bar Association presented its "Top 5 under 35" awards. This year there were seven winners.
Hon. Amy R. Krause was the Master of Ceremonies for the event, held at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center on March 22nd.
"I do want to say thank you to everyone for being here with us," said Judge Krause. "This evening gives us an opportunity to recognize our young lawyers."
She commented on the Ingham County Bar Association's long standing tradition of the more experienced lawyers mentoring the newer lawyers saying, "We are a very welcoming bar association. We can be proud of that."

Lindsey A. Elya has worked with Legal Services of South Central Michigan since April 2010. Her practice is primarily family and elder law cases. Outside of her professional life, she works with youth through her church and coaching high school volleyball. Working with Africa Missions Service, she traveled to a village in the Republic of Kenya (East Africa) where she initiated a beading project to help women who are in financial need raise money.
Joshua K. Richardson is with Foster, Swift, Collins & Smith, P.C., where he practices in the areas of employment litigation, municipal law, real property litigation, appellate, and insurance defense and regulatory law. He is admitted to practice in all Michigan courts, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, and the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition to his practice, he sits on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel and the Boys & Girls Club of Lansing and is active with the American Inns of Court.
James F. ("J.V.") Anderton is a shareholder with Loomis, Ewert, Parsley, Davis & Gotting, P.C. He practices in a variety of tax-related fields, including entity formation, operation and dissolution, estate planning and administration, and real estate transactions. He has published multiple articles in Michigan Tax Lawyer, and has also been published nationally in The Journal of Real Taxation and Business Entities. He was a founding member of the Mid-Michigan chapter of The First Tee, a charity designed to impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf, and he currently serves as the Vice-President of the organization. He serves on the advisory board of both the Mid-Michigan Innovation Club for Entrepreneurs and The Hatch.
Ross Bower graduated from Kalamazoo College and Cooley Law School and joined Fahey Schultz Burzych Rhodes PLC in Okemos. He focuses his practice on municipal law and drain law with an emphasis on zoning, building & planning, property tax appeals & special assessments, and Michigan's Drain Code. As part of the firm's Local Government Practice Group, he serves as assistant Township Attorney, Village Attorney, and City Attorney to over 80 local municipalities and as consultant and counsel to county drain commissioners throughout Michigan where he handles litigation in administrative, trial, and appellate courts. Ross lives in Okemos with his wife Hilary, an English teacher, and their daughter who is expecting her new sister very soon.
Brian P. Lick is an associate in the Construction Practice Group in Clark Hill PLC's Lansing Office. He represents owners, contractors and suppliers in litigation of construction and real estate matters, including breach of contract, lien foreclosures and violations of the Michigan Building Contract Fund Act in State and Federal Courts. In 2011, Brian authored an amicus brief to the Michigan Supreme Court, in Miller-Davis v Ahrens and has drafted memoranda and articles analyzing the effect the Supreme Court decision will have on contractors and the construction industry. Brian is a board member of the Young Lawyers Section of the Ingham County Bar Association, his home owner's association, and he is Treasurer of The Lick Family Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance directly to Lansing area individuals and families who have suffered an economic or health crisis. Brian resides in Okemos with his wife Jessica and two sons, Sawyer and Sullivan, who have re-inspired his affinity for making paper airplanes.
Donald Rencher is a Staff Attorney for the Michigan State Housing Development Authority's Office of Legal Affairs. In his position, he focuses on the areas of fair housing, real estate transaction, and administrative law. Rencher graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and African American Studies from the University of Michigan and obtained his Juris Doctor with a concentration in administrative law from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2010. He serves on the Board of Directors for Gateway Community Services and is chairperson for its Personnel Committee. He also serves on the Lansing Board of Zoning Appeals and is the Vice President of the Lansing David Dunning Bar Association.
Edwar A. Zeinch, a solo practioner. His legal services include: Criminal Defense, Bankruptcy, Family Law, Business Organization, Landlord Tenant, Social Security Benefits, and Personal Injury. He strives to maintain personal and professional relationships with his clients while resolving their legal issues. He is a graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
The Ingham County Bar presents the award to recognize the outstanding young lawyers of Ingham County. The Young Lawyers wanted the award to be inclusive rather than an exclusive process. It was not limited to one area of the law and was created to recognize the lawyers that go beyond their caseloads and billable hours. The criteria are 1) knowledge of the law, 2) contribution to the legal community as well as the community at large and 3) professionalism towards the court, other lawyers and their clients.
