Cooley Law School's Intellectual Property Program wins top ranking
Thomas M. Cooley Law School's intellectual property (IP) law curriculum has earned a top ranking in a recent independent report published by researchers at the William Mitchell Law School. The Mitchell Report on Intellectual Property Curricula ranks the strength of the IP law curricula at all 222 U.S. law schools. Cooley's IP curriculum ranked first nationally in IP courses and second in number of IP course categories.
"Several years ago, Cooley Law School identified intellectual property law as a critical legal specialty with expanding opportunities for Cooley graduates," said Associate Dean Charles P. Cercone, Cooley Law School's Dean of Faculty. "Our commitment to IP law includes an innovative online curriculum that addresses the needs of students with technical backgrounds interested in patent law and those planning to practice in non-technical areas. We are proud that the Mitchell Report has recognized our top-notch IP law curriculum."
David C. Berry, a Cooley professor and director of Cooley's graduate program in Intellectual Property Law, noted that, "IP is a diverse and growing area of law practice that is essential to the continued revitalization of the regional and national economies. To carry out our 'practice-ready' philosophy, Cooley has developed an extensive IP curriculum, including an IP concentration, a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree program, and a Joint J.D./LL.M. degree program that taps the expertise of dedicated IP faculty and practicing adjunct faculty. The IP program uses synchronous, web-based and on-campus classes, so that students across Michigan and graduate students across the globe can participate in our courses."
The Mitchell Report rankings are based on the breadth and depth of each law school's IP curriculum, reflecting the number of course offerings and the availability of courses in designated categories. Cooley's IP curriculum was ranked first nationally in course offerings (earning 24 points) and second in number of categories satisfied (15 categories).
