Memorial Day message

Memorial Day weekend is approaching, and it’s time for long weekends and barbeques with family and friends. It’s also a time to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, and those who are still in harm’s way defending our freedoms.

“This Memorial Day, I would like to ask everyone to take a moment to remember the 703,000 Veterans in our state who have given so much to this country, and asked for so little in return, said Jason Allen, senior deputy director, Michigan Department of Veterans Affairs.

“I also want to remind Veterans that if they have not already applied for VA benefits that they should do so, said Allen. “There is funding available to help those in need.”

Only about 18 percent of Michigan’s Veterans who are qualified are enrolled in the VA health benefits program. “This number could increase just by ensuring that Veterans receive this information and know that there is a place they can go to receive assistance in applying for health benefits,” added Allen.

All Veterans, whether they feel they are qualified or not should go to the Veterans Affairs website and www.VA.Gov and see what benefits they may have already earned.

Applying for Veteran’s health care has never been easier or more important and can be done by filling out a 1010 EZ form. This is user-friendly document that can qualify to receive medical services from the VA.   This form can be found by calling 1-877-222-VETS. A copy of your DD214 may be needed. Contact (517) 335-1623 to receive a copy.
