SBM's Nancy Brown receives Gov. Swainson Award for the Michigan Legal Milestones program

State Bar of Michigan Director of Member Services and Communications Nancy F. Brown was honored with the Governor John B. Swainson Award at noon on Thursday, May 31 at a ceremony in the state Capitol rotunda. The award is given by the Michigan Historical Commission to government employees who have gone ''above and beyond'' their official job duties to help preserve the state's history. Ms. Brown, an employee at the State Bar for 36 years, was nominated for her role in overseeing and nurturing the Michigan Legal Milestones Program. The 26-year-old program, established during the State Bar presidency of George T. Roumell Jr., highlights significant decisions, trials, events and people who have made an impact on our history, landscape and laws. Milestones have covered historic Michigan trials, the work of crusaders for justice, the legality of Native American tribal laws and customs, victory for women's suffrage, the fall of McCarthyism and the end of Jim Crow laws. To date, there are 36 Michigan Legal Milestones. The 37th Milestone will focus on the Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act and will be dedicated on Aug. 28. Milestones are recalled in bronze plaques that relate their historical significance, and are placed at featured sites throughout the state. ''We are so pleased that the Michigan Historical Commission has recognized the value of this outstanding program and the key role of our wonderful colleague, Nancy Brown,'' State Bar Executive Director Janet Welch said. This year's winners also included Michigan Court of Appeals Judicial Assistant Jennifer Boardman, for her preservation of the Belle Isle Aquarium, and U.S. Department of Defense Logistics Data Analyst Joann Germinder, for her work at the Michigan Historical Museum.
