2012 State History Conference
The Historical Society of Michigan's 138th Annual Meeting and State History Conference will be held September 28-30, 2012 in Monroe.
The weekend will feature several interesting keynotes, including "Remember the Raisin! The Story of Michigan's Greatest Battlefield" with Ralph Naveaux of the Michigan War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission; "An Evening with George A. Custer" with Steve Alexander; "Michigan Historic Sites from a National Perspective" with Mary A. Bomar, a retired National Park Service director; and "War of 1812 Film and Commentary" with writer/producer Christopher Cook and James McConnell of the War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission.
Session topics and workshops at the conference include:
* The Boy Governor Stevens T. Mason and the Birth of Michigan Politics
* Fermi Fuel Melting Incident: A Nuclear Accident Long Before Three Mile Island
* Industrial History of Monroe County
* What is Real? How to Detect Reprints of Newspapers
* The Tragic Effect of Michigan's Indian Policy on Monroe County's Native Pottawatomi
* Remember the Ladies: Women in Michigan Politics
* "The Eyes of the Nation are on Monroe": The Newton Steel Strike
* Preserving Windows to the Past: The Handling and Storage of Scrapbooks
* Before God and the Devil: The Black Legion, 1925-1936
* The Boys of '61: The Michigan Battery
* El Museo del Norte: A Museum Without Walls
* Diversity Outreach through Creative Collaborations
Also scheduled are three pre-conference tours, which will provide visitors with an insider's perspective of the River Raisin National Battlefield, the museums of Monroe, or the Immaculate Heart of Mary Motherhouse. There were also be a pre-conference workshop concerning the process of developing and implementing an oral history project. The conference also includes presentations of the 2012 State History Awards to this year's award winners.
