A historic civil rights act endorsing equality and inclusiveness was the subject of the State Bar’s 37th Michigan Legal Milestone dedication on August 28 at the state Capitol building in Lansing.

The noon program highlighted the 1976 Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA) which prohibits discriminatory practices in employment, education, housing, public service, real estate transactions and the use of public accommodations because of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex or marital status.

A panel of speakers discussed the history and significance of ELCRA and its impact on the state and the nation. The ceremony closed with the unveiling of a bronze plaque commemorating the Act. State Bar of Michigan President Julie Fershtman and SBM Executive Director Janet Welch will share the duties of master of ceremonies.
Speakers included:

• Rep. Fred Durhal Jr., Michigan House of Representatives

• Mel Larsen, co-sponsor of ELCRA

• Aliyah Sabree, great-granddaughter of Daisy Elliott, co-sponsor of ELCRA

• Dr. Daniel Krichbaum, director, Michigan Department of Civil Rights

•Professor John Nussbaumer, associate dean, Thomas M. Cooley Law School

The award-winning Michigan Legal Milestones Program recognizes significant cases, events and personalities in our state’s history. It is overseen by the State Bar of Michigan
