Record Making

Noted Birmingham attorney Henry Baskin made a bit of history last week, donating a number of valuable records from his extensive collection to the Detroit Historical Society during a special presentation August 27. Baskin, who has been the longtime host of “Due Process” on Detroit Public Television, presented the Historical Society with three gold records, including “Boogie Down” by Eddie Kendricks, “The Eddie Kendricks Album,” and “Marvin Gaye Live.” He also donated a platinum album, “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye, which sold more than 2 million copies, along with several original album covers for Motown artists, including Rare Earth and David Ruffin. The donated artifacts will be placed in the new Allesee Gallery of Culture, which will be unveiled at the Detroit Historical Museum in November, according to Bob Bury, executive director and CEO of the Detroit Historical Society. Baskin, who acquired the artifacts during his many years representing various Detroit and national celebrities, also posed for a photo with his 15-year-old grandson, Chad Coffman, a jazz pianist who plays with area groups including the Detroit Civic Jazz Orchestra. The Detroit Historical Museum is located at 5401 Woodward in the heart of Detroit’s cultural center. The Detroit Historical Society operates the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum.
