Ten honored as Marable Senior Citizens of the month

Flint 68th District Judge Herman Marable, Jr. announced that ten senior citzens this year have been awarded Herman Sr. & Iris B. Marable Senior Citizen of the Month Awards in 2012. The awardees are Roberta Rouse, Rev. Dr. Fred S. White, Millie Nash, Charles and Charlotte Williams. Also honored posthumously were Bob Perani, Margaret DePriest, John Tempia, Penny Roberts, and Harrison McGee. This award named after Judge Marable’s mother and late father was established in late 2005 to recognize Genesee County citizens, age 60 or over who have participated in efforts to improve the quality of life in the community.

Roberta Rouse, who celebrated her 90th birthday this year is a long time member and worker at Christ the King Church. She is an inspiration to many as she was a professional dancer, and is still fit and active.

Rev. Dr. Fred S. White is the pastor and founder of New Heaven Missionary Baptist Church in Flint where he recently celebrated 39 years of service. Dr. White  serves as President of the Great Lakes District Congress, Vice-President of the Baptist Ministers Alliance, and is a member of the Concerned Pastors for Social Action and Co-Chairperson of the CPSA Courier.

Millie Nash is a community activist, and minister. She is a longtime south side Flint resident who continues her involvement with numerous community, religious and civic organizations.

Charles Williams, married to Charlotte Williams for 62 years, was the longtime director of the Genesee County office of the Michigan Department of Social Services. He has been active in Quinn Chapel AME Church for many years.

Charlotte Williams was a member of the Genesee County Board of Supervisors/ Commissioners, serving as Chairperson. She was active on the national scene and Served as the President of the National Association of Counties, and consulted with President Jimmy Carter on local government issues.

Bob Perani was a star player with the Flint Generals hockey team who went on to become a prominent businessman and Flint booster. He owned Perani’s Hockey World, North America’s largest chain of hockey supply stores and he was an owner of the Flint Generals Hockey team. Perani Arena bears his name. He passed away in April.

Margaret DePriest, who also died in April, was a retired social worker and business owner. She was the founder of the local Rubicon House drug treatment program, and she was active in many civic and community organizations. She often donated her time and money to the causes she believed in.

John Tempia, who passed away in July, was a retired teacher who served on the Flint Human Relations Commission, the Flint Neighborhood Coalition, and many other civic organizations. He was a diehard supporter of Flint, and left a wonderful legacy to his students.

Penny Roberts died in January. She was a community activist and a leader in the Native American community. She was active in many civic, political, cultural, and community organizations. She also served on the Flint Human Relations Commission and was a great advocate for the concerns of area senior citizens.

Harrison McGee, who died in August, was a long time music teacher in the Flint Schools, and he served as the music director for Mt .Olive Missionary Baptist Church. He was very active in the local music community. He inspired many students, some of whom went on to professional music careers.

Four of the awardees, Mrs. Nash, Mr. McGee, and Mr & Mrs Williams, were recognized at the 8th Annual South Side Reunion Picnic held last month at Brennan Park.
