Veterans Day 2012

Since 1919, Americans have honored veterans on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month--a tribute to the day and time that an armistice was signed effectively ending World War I. Armistice Day would become a legal holiday in 1938--a day dedicated to the cause of world peace.
In 1954, following World War II and the Korean Conflict, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day Proclamation, celebrating the contributions and sacrifices of all veterans. This year, Sunday, November 11, 2012 is officially Veterans Day, with Monday November 12th the observed holiday, part of the Uniform Holiday Bill enacted in 1968 making Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day, three day holiday weekends.
The observance of Veterans Day on November 11th regardless of what day of the week it falls, not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: a day of celebration to honor America's Veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
Veterans Day is also a good opportunity to remind veterans, dependants and survivors to apply to the Veteran's Administration for health, education, housing, vocational rehabilitation and other benefits that they may be eligible for. ''We encourage Michigan veterans, widows, and survivors to review the benefits they have earned,'' said Jason Allen, Senior Deputy Director of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
The best way to start the process is to complete a VONAPP application online at http:// 1.usa.gov/TwgxqK, visit your local County Veterans Office, or meet with a Veterans Service Officer, a list of which can be found on the Michigan Veterans Affairs website, http:// www. michigan.gov/veterans.
Also, for eligible veterans facing financial hardship, an application may be made to the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund through your county contact. Details regarding eligibility and the type of emergency grant available through the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund can be found on the Michigan Veterans Affairs website or through contacting your county veteran service office.
